Katie Badolato is our Econista of the Month. She is the perfect Econista, because she feels that in order for everyone to make a big impact in helping our environment, means doing small things every day. “Since I was very young, spending time in nature and learning about it has been a big part of my life. My love for the Earth has always been abundant. More recently, I’ve started to realize that if I want to help keep the Earth beautiful for future generations, I needed to make some changes in my daily practices,” Katie said.
Rather than using a plastic toothbrush, she switched to a bamboo toothbrush. To reduce packaging, Katie switched to bar shampoo and conditioner that uses no packaging and she even makes her own lotions and body scrub products. However, one of the biggest changes she made in her life started about 7 months ago when she stopped purchasing new clothing. She explained why, “It shocked me to learn the clothing industry is one of the most polluting industries in the world with pollution and waste produced at every level of production and distribution. Trust me, as a 19 year-old, I love a new outfit as much as the next girl, but when I took a minute to think about the part that I played in this wasteful industry as a consumer, I realized it would be hypocritical of me to consider myself an Earth-lover and continue to contribute to this cycle. Now, I opt to shop at second-hand stores or brands that use sustainably and/or recycled sourced materials. This change in my life has set me on a path to continue making other changes that are leading me to a greener, happier life.”
