It may seem like a daunting task, but there are some quick and easy steps we can take to become more environmentally-conscious. Adapting an eco-friendly beauty routine is an easy first step in becoming an #econista.

I gathered a team of hacks, tricks, swaps and DIYs to help cut out unnecessary waste and harmful materials for a more environmentally-friendly beauty routine. I tried several of them out and found that not only are they super simple but feel better on my hair, skin (and conscience).

Here are some simple self-loving and earth-loving ideas for a more sustainable beauty routine.

ECO-FRIENDLY BEAUTY HACK #1

Disposable makeup-removing wipes à reusable makeup-removing towels

I got some of these as a gift last year, and they’re a game-changer. Save the waste (and $$) of throwing away 1-2 wipes every day with this swap. The ones I have are uber soft and only require warm water to remove makeup. Just wash them once they get dirty for a cleaner skin (and planet!).

ECO-FRIENDLY BEAUTY HACK #2

Hair masks, conditioner, and moisturizer à coconut oil

Many mainstream hair and skin products contain harmful chemicals like sulfates, silicones, microbeads, BHA, BHT, phthalates, triclosan, silicones and synthetic fragrances. These are damaging to not only our planet but our health and bodies.

Minimalistic swap: ditch your hair mask, conditioner, moisturizer (and 30 other things) for organic coconut oil. It moisturizes deeper than any other long-list-ingredient product I’ve tried.

ECO-FRIENDLY BEAUTY HACK #3

Bottles à bars

Bottled shampoos, conditioners, soaps and deodorants pollute the environment and enable waste. Try swapping bottles for bars to decrease your footprint and waste.

ECO-FRIENDLY BEAUTY HACK #4

Daily contacts à biweekly contacts

Microplastics can be particularly harmful to the marine environment and its inhabitants. Switching from daily to biweekly contacts will decrease your contact disposal from 365 pairs per year to 26 pairs. I’ve also found biweeklys to be more durable and feel better on my eyes.

ECO-FRIENDLY BEAUTY HACK #5

Single-use products à double+ use products

Try synthesizing some of your beauty products. Instead of buying a primer, moisturizer, SPF and foundation, find an all-in-one. Many companies sell minimalistic products like CC+ cream that are multi-purpose.

A product I love is my double-use lip and cheek tint. It helps me cut back on waste from buying separate lipsticks and blush (while helping my makeup game be on-point).

ECO-FRIENDLY BEAUTY HACK #6

Disposable razors à reusable, stainless-steel razors

Reusable razors are a more sustainable way to stay smooth. I’ve also found them to be higher quality and friendlier to my sensitive skin. Try switching to a vintage, stainless steel razor for an even more #econista routine.

ECO-FRIENDLY BEAUTY HACK #7

Normal toothbrush à bamboo

Bamboo products are sustainable and aesthetically-pleasing. Bamboo toothbrushes are one of many innovative bamboo products that can help boost your pro-environmental glow.

ECO-FRIENDLY BEAUTY HACK #8

Store-bought toothpaste à DIY

I tried this recipe I found online for homemade, zero-waste toothpaste. With only three-ingredients, you can decrease your plastics, waste and use of harmful chemicals.

ECO-FRIENDLY BEAUTY HACK #9

Over-flowing makeup bag à the basics

Take a good look at your makeup and hair bag and see if you can simplify your routine.

What things do you really need? What do you actually use? It might save you time getting ready, too.

ECO-FRIENDLY BEAUTY HACK #10

Dumping à recycling, reusing and repurposing

Be creative. Think if you can recycle, reuse and repurpose an item before discarding it.

Before you throw that container, tube or lid away, could you reuse it? Recreate its purpose? Also, look to buy recyclable products.

ECO-FRIENDLY BEAUTY HACK #11

Excessive packaging à minimalistic packaging

Look for minimal packaging, natural, non-plastic and/or zero-waste packaging.

Many products use up a lot of bulky plastic for a small amount of product. Look for the mindful ones that don’t.

ECO-FRIENDLY BEAUTY HACK #12

Basic brands à eco-friendly brands

One of the easiest ways to go green is to buy from sustainable, eco-friendly fashion and beauty brands. True environmentally-conscious brands simplify the process and allow you to give back, easy.
